Vocational Education

The Student Services Department has dedicated staff who can facilitate VET courses, work experience and school-based traineeships.

Some VET courses are delivered at Stuartholme whilst others require study off-campus with another educational provider (i.e. TAFE, private providers).

What is a VET course?

A VET course is a practical, competency based qualification aimed at preparing students for working in a particular sector. VET qualifications are recognised in every Australian State.

VET courses cover a large number of careers and industries including Business, Creative Industries, Hospitality, Events and Tourism, Health and Community Services, Horticulture and Environment, Information and Communication Technology, Beauty and Hairdressing, Trades etc.

A completed Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma will provide students with a rank (68, 74 and 82 respectively) and can provide pathways to universities and other tertiary study providers. Upon successful completion, this contributes to the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), is awarded a QTAC rank and accepted in all Queensland universities.

How is eligibility determined?

Students eligible for a VET course may be identified by their performance in Year 10 testing and school results. Testing is carried out by the Student Services Department.

Students wishing to be considered for an externally based vocational subject must first meet with the Careers Advisor to discuss possible options and gain approval.

Work experience

The VET Coordinator can help students source work experience and train them in Workplace Health and Safety before they commence placement. They also organise the paper work so students are insured by the School while on placement.

School-based traineeships

Stuartholme offers School-based traineeships as part of the VET program in Years 11 and 12. Traineeships are a great way to support theoretical learning through practical experience for an area of work a student is interested in.

Trainees work one day per week as an employee of a company, are paid a wage and study a Certificate III relevant to their work. For example, we have had students working at the Emporium Hotel completing a SIT30707 Certificate III in Hospitality.

The VET Coordinator helps students source a traineeship and provides support over the course of their training.

Students who choose this option miss one day of lessons and are required to catch up each week. The Curriculum Office and Student Services Department work closely in ensuring student timetables are adjusted to allow for this.
